The Political Candidate by Catherine Kelley
I once saw him running for public office
Giving a speech, looking cleaned and pressed
Pitching his lines with a cool marble smile
And coaxing words in like smooth scented oil
A wave to the crowds, presenting his best
Saying this to the right, and that to the left.
And I thought a fly's life would be far easier
No contest to win, only one face to wear
Cothed without fuss, but chic in black
Satisfaction derived in meals from the trash
With no one but self to please and impress
Having little to do but eat and rest.
